在历史上，十字军东征（Crusade，1096年 - 1291年）是一系列在教宗的准许下进行的有名的宗教性军事行动，由西欧的封建主和骑士对地中海东岸的国家发动的战争。当时原属於天主教的圣地落入伊斯兰教手中，罗马天主教为了收复失地，便进行多次东征行动。但有一些东征是针对其他天主教派，并非针对伊斯兰，如第四次十字军东征。
背景
这场战争被罗马教廷赋予了宗教战争的性质，号召从异教徒（穆斯林）手中夺回圣城耶路撒冷。因尔也被形象的比喻为“十字架反对弓月”。参加战争-{的士}-兵佩有十字标志，因此称为十字军。

八次东征
1095年11月26日，教皇乌尔班二世在法国的克勒芒召开会议，号召所有人拿起武器，从异教徒手中夺回“主的坟墓”，并且说参加远征的人可以赦免罪孽，战死疆场的人可以升入天堂，第一次十字军东征开始。1099年十字军占领耶路撒冷，并建立了耶路撒冷王国，同时还建立了三个附属小国：埃德萨伯国、的黎波里伯国、安条克公国。
1144年，塞尔柱帝国攻占埃德萨。耶路撒冷国王向法王路易七世和德国国王康拉德三世求援，开始了第二次十字军东征（1147年 - 1149年），结果遭到惨败。
1187年，埃及苏丹萨拉丁攻占耶路撒冷，俘虏了耶路撒冷国王。神圣罗马帝国皇帝腓特烈一世（红胡子）、英国狮心理查一世和法王腓力二世发动了第三次十字军东征（1189年 - 1192年），却遭到萨拉丁和东罗马帝国的联合抵抗，无功而返，腓特烈一世也在途中坠水而死。
1202年，教皇英诺森三世发起了第四次十字军东征（1202年 - 1204年）。最初的目标是埃及，后来改变了军事计划，攻占了君士坦丁堡，并洗劫达一星期之久，拜占庭帝国的大部分土地也被攻克，并建立了拉丁帝国（1204年 - 1261年）。
1212年，教会在法国和德意志组织儿童十字军东征。1218年发起第五次十字军东征（1218年 - 1221年），以埃及为进攻目标。1219年攻占达米埃塔，1221年由于尼罗河水泛滥被迫撤退。

此后，教皇或国王都号召不起东征，十字军在东方的领土逐渐落入穆斯林手中。1291年，最后一个据点阿克（位于现在的巴勒斯坦北部）陷落，耶路撒冷王国灭亡，十字军东征以失败告终。
影响
十字军东征对地中海沿岸国家人民带来了深重灾难，西欧各国人民也损失惨重。几十万十字军死亡。同时教廷和封建主却取得了大量的财富。但是另一方面，十字军东征也促进了东西方文化的交流，加速了西欧手工业、商业的发展。
